For our prelim task we decided to go with the song situations by escape the fate for this task we had to recreate the first minute of the music video which was going to be hard. This was because in the first scene there is a bus and bus's don't come easy.

Representation Textual Analysis of miley cyrus: Adore you

In recent years Miley Cyrus has turned from the country singing Tennessee sweetheart daughter of the famed country singer billy ray Cyrus to this sassy skin showing diva that"cant stop" twerking. Since Miley killed off Hannah Montana and ripped herself away from the Disney franchise


She has taken a drastic left turn into ghetto vile and refuses to cover up in anyway shape or form. Some say that shes just trying to find herself in the crazy voyeur of the music industry while others feel that because of her Hannah history she is setting a bad example to children who still idolize her and feel she is showing young girls that its okay to whore yourself out for the enjoyment of men.

Miley's Most recent video Adore you is a classic example of voyeurism, if you don't already know what voyeurism is its the act of watching a person or people do sexually suggestive things without knowing your watching much like a peep show. The video is set under the sheets of her bed and also in a bath tub. During the majority of the video it looks as though she is touching herself extremely erotically and suggestively while filming it, for either porn's sake or for someone. This isn't really made clear.The camera has been made to make you feel as though you are under the covers with her, clearly appealing to male gaze. We see close ups of her hands running over her body and close ups of areas in which most would find extremely sexually provocative. I feel that she is wearing flesh colored underwear to give the suggestion of nakedness. Most countries will not allow a video to be shown if too much is on display therefor to get around that she wore the thinnest underwear imaginable and made it flesh colored to match her skin tone. She then takes the video even further to actually put her hands down her underwear to film or at least suggest the idea of her masturbating, followed by an ariel full body shot of her lying in bed touching herself.

I feel although the song is slow and there isn't a clear indication of tweking and butts in your face it makes the viewer feel even more so uncomfortable because she has made it look so intimate. She is trying her best to look as sexy and suggestive as possible although this would be acceptable for most other celebraties we need to remember that she has a huge child fan base.

i feel that in this video she is trying to represent herself as a sex icon while also appearing as fragile and quite shy. Although this sounds like an upside men actually find it to be more sexually appealing if a girl acts defenseless, shy and extremely fragile while also being sexually alluring. I feel miley was trying to represent herself as this shy virgin girl that most men love. Just before this video was released miley had a huge break up with ex boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. This could be a desperate attempt to restore his affection through many means possible.

Although this part may look extremely sexual and provocative (which to be honest it kind of is) i feel there is a deeper meaning to it. When she is seen in the bath bathing herself in the clouded water i feel this is meant to represent her washing away the past and getting clean to start a fresh new future.However when she touches herself its her remembering his touch and missing it. She is touching herself in all of the places he touched her and feeling happy but sad at the same time because she is unable to let go no matter how hard she tries. Maybe she feels the only way to get over it is to "whore herself out" and make videos like she does represented by the video recorder.

What are the emotions it stirs?

It makes me feel extremely serine and calm like i'm floating on air without a care in the world.However this soon changes when you realize what he is singing about, i then become quite depressed and empathetic.
What do you visualise?

I visualize a man  walking on clouds tip toeing through the air then touching the sunlight then as the chorus comes up i imagine him falling through the sky to be swallowed up by the earth.  the clouds representing the time he was with her and felt as light as air without any troubles however when hes falling it represents the fact everything is broken and his troubles have only just begun. He is then swallowed by the earth to come out somewhere that is full of misery and hate almost like hell where he becomes bitter and unforgiving to the girl
What images are conjured up in your mind when you hear the song?

i get images of stars and pink skies, clouds and grassy fields. I imagine the scenery almost like heaven somewhere separate from this world where physics doesn't apply.

How do you picture the music video?

I picture a close up of a mans eyes opening gradually zooming out into a medium close up of him sitting up to find himself in a beautiful paradise lead by a tracking shot of him walking through the sky where he falls through one of the clouds.(green screen). We then see him falling through the sky following his movements which close up looks really slow then when given a long shot is show to zoom through the sky  followed by a medium long shot of him falling into the ground.It then goes completely black  with him floating in what seems to be his own regrets with projected videos of the time he spent with his ex girlfriend.
What did others say about their ideas for a music video? Which did you like the best? 

 a man walking through a maze with thornes sticking out of it and then it contrasts to scenes of the band singing. Then throughout the music video these two scenes keep changing to show the journey of love that he went through.

in Spain or a foreign town. There is a tracking shot of the lead singer walking away from the camera. He then leads to a beach, and sings to the camera. There are flashbacks of his past relationship. A grey filter is used over the shots of him walking down the Beach, but brighter colours on the flashbacks. This reflects on his emotions. The brighter days were the ones he spent with her. At then end of the music video he lays flat on the sand, she then comes and lays next to him, and the grey filter is remove, and brighter colours appear.- sarah

I could see at first a close-up shot of a vocalist's face, with a background of the sky behind him, and the camera slowly spiraling around away from him as he sings. Then I could see the band float in, all floating in the sky with moonwalk-like movement and playing their instruments in slow-motion behind the vocalist. - George

I think my favorite idea would be Georges mainly because he also had the idea of floating and abnormalities.

AUDIENCE - why and how do you consume music?

How do you consume music? 
When? do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?

I tend to listen to music on the weekend or while getting ready it helps to get me in the mood to do something for the day. If i'm going out with my friends ill listen to an upbeat track, if im having a lazy day it will probably be soft and melodic. I also enjoy listening to music while i exercise and walk it helps me keep a steady rhythm when i run to the beat. 

Where? clubs, bedroom, gigs, car?

Most of the time i will listen to music either in my bedroom or on the go.

Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual experience?

Sometimes however everyone's music taste varies so alot of the time they will want to listen to 

metal music while i want to chill with some Ben Howard or of monsters and men.

How? radio, computer, ipod, tv, live, dancing, homework, getting ready ie doing other things - background wallpaper

Most of the time ill use my computer to listen to music mostly on you tube however occasionally i'll add some songs to my pad and listen to that on some ear/head phones.

Why? What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?

I think i listen to music because each different genre makes me feel a different emotion. If i want

to cry ill listen to a song that has an emotional meaning that is close to an experience i had, 

if i want to be happy i'll listen to a song that has an up beat rhythm and fast tempo. This applies

to any genre that can convey emotions because not only does it have emotionally healing qualities it makes me happy and want to dance.
